Scholarship applications are open for students applying to post-secondary studies in performing arts.
High schools students who have lived in Richmond for at least two years have until May 3 to apply for a Richmond Community Foundation (RCF) scholarship.
Valued at $5,000, the Phyllis Taylor Scholarship is awarded to students of British or Irish descent who are pursuing post-secondary studies in the musical or performing arts.
Preferences will be given to students who have demonstrated community engagement, artistic ability and leadership skills. If there are several qualified candidates, multiple scholarships will be awarded within a year.
Previous winners include McMath Secondary alumnus Erin Purghart, who recently graduated from UBC’s acting program, and Emma Gold, who fell in love with acting through involvement with Gateway Theatre. Gold is now enrolled in Langara’s Studio 58 professional theatre training program.
The scholarship was created in 2004 when Richmond’s beloved music teacher Phyllis Taylor, a lifetime member of the Richmond Music Teachers Association, passed away that year.
The scholarship was established to provide a platform for young talents to unleash their artistic skills.

For 2022, Spark (Single Parent Award for Resilience and Knowledge) will give out 30 scholarships worth up to $40,000 each to help single-parents further their education.
In addition to the financial help, award winners will be given free access to mentors, peer support and Beedie Luminaries online community.
